Amy Vanderbilt’s Valentine’s Ball

Amy Vanderbilt had just died under mysterious circumstances. Was she pushed? Would it mean the death of etiquette? The scandal provided a cue for the Vignettes, tired of playing the back-up chorus as Peanettes, Cocanettes or Wagnettes, to come out as women performers in their own right. Under the direction of Lin Bennett, a ball was arranged, with Flakey Rose Hip as Amy (his leg in a cast and his head in a lampshade), Paul Wong and Ann Allen as the Emperor and the Empress of Wu and the Vignettes as a bevy of debutantes. Guests were invited to appear in evening dress. Dancing followed the performance.
