Artists’ Use of Telecommunications

The Western Front (Hank Bull) was a node on an international network that included San Francisco (LaMammelle), Toronto (Norman White, Trinity Square Video), Boston (MIT), New York (Willoughby Sharp), Bristol (Roy Ascott), Vienna (Robert Adrian), Sydney (Eric Gidney) and Tokyo (Tsukuba U., Michael Goldberg). The event was organised by Bill Bartlett. Participants took turns transmitting images via slowscan video while the other nodes received. There was also a text-based conference on I.P. Sharp’s computer mailbox. This system was arranged in such a way that if you hit a carriage return it opened a gate allowing any incoming message to print on your machine. As a result, outgoing messages were intercut with incoming in a spontaneous cut-up.
