Stefan Smulovitz’ custom software Kenaxis is a major innovation in the use of the computer as a real-time instrument. As composer/performer (laptop and viola) he has collaborated with some of the world’s esteemed musicians including Paul Plimley, Paul Rutherford, François Houle, Jesse Zubot, Mark Feldman, Peggy Lee, Torsten Muller, Evan Parker and with John Zorn’s Vancouver Cobra project and Uri Caine’s Goldberg Variations.

Drummer Andrew Greenwald was reared on a steady diet of traditional Jewish music he heard on his grandparent’s record player and his frequent attendance of synagogue, and an equal portion of classic rock fed to him by his father. Inspired by jazz and improvised music he pursued studies in classical percussion and composition at the University of Vermont and New York University. He has performed with many of New York’s finest and has received critical acclaim from the New York Times, Downbeat magazine, and Earshot Jazz magazine.

Composer/improviser/saxophonist, Chris Kelly’s diverse work ranges from the glitch-cut and paste laptop electronic scene, to both large and small jazz ensembles, film soundtracks and modern dance accompaniment. Kelly works with numerous Vancouver projects including Little Stitches, Hospital, Adios, Eye of Newt, Vancouver New Music and the NOW Orchestra.

No stranger to Vancouver audiences, Paul Plimley is a pianist/composer/improviser active nationally and internationally for more than 20 years. The breadth of his work includes international TV and radio broadcasts, solo concerts, ensemble collaborations and over a dozen CD recordings with musicians from around the globe. Most recently he is taken up playing the guitar.

Kenaxis is a realtime software environment allowing for the use of the laptop as an expressive instrument. Developed by Stefan Smulovitz over the last 5 years for use in various improvisational and compositional settings, this software allows for the playback and manipulation of prerecorded samples or the ability to sample sounds in realtime and manipulate/loop them. The latest incarnation allows for all of this realtime madness to happen in 3 to 8 speaker surround sound. Spins, spiral or exact placement of sounds are all possible in realtime. All welcome!
