Beginning on Monday October 17, Vancouver’s foremost improvising musicians from the New Orchestra Workshop will conduct a series of eight weekly workshops for students in contemporary improvised music. These workshops will explore structures for improvisation and the history of this tradition through audio-visual support, live demonstration, and most importantly, ensemble work with participants. Different artists will present their own programme from week to week, and the series will culminate in a concert performance by an ensemble comprised of instructors and participants. These workshops provide a supportive environment with guidance from experienced professionals who will work with them in an informal atmosphere that will encourage experimentation. The emphasis will be on observation and participation. All workshops are free and open to all instruments – amateurs and professionals alike.
