As part of an ongoing focus on the Western Front Media Archive, Western Front Media Arts is pleased to present a talk by Rudolf Frieling, Curator of Media Arts at SFMOMA, and video art preservation expert. Frieling will give a presentation on a large-scale preservation and exhibition project titled 40 Years Videoart.de. Over the course of two years Frieling worked toward preservation, digitization and dissemination of important works of German video art, resulting in five exhibitions at museums across Germany, a publication titled Digital Heritage: Video Art in Germany from 1963 – Present and an online resource: www.40jahrevideokunst.de.
After the presentation Western Front Executive Director Caitlin Jones will join Frieling in conversation about video art preservation and dissemination. A question and answer period will follow.
Rudolf Frieling is curator of media arts at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; from 1994-2006 he was curator and researcher at ZKM, Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany; previous curatorial projects include the net art section of the 2002 Sao Paolo Biennale and Sound-Image (2003) in Mexico City; he was coeditor of Media Art Action (1997), Media Art Interaction (2000), Media Art Net (2004-5), and 40yearsvideoart.de (2006); he most recently edited and curated for SFMOMA The Art of Particiption: 1950 to Now.
