Don’t Miss This Exclusive Canadian Engagement!
From the aristocratic Sunda culture of West Java comes tembang, an extraordinary form of sacred musical poetry – intoxicating and haunting, rich and refined. On this night, Euis Komariah, one of the most prominent and acclaimed singers in modern Indonesian music, performs a selection of traditional and contemporary tembang. Gangan Garmana, trained by the legendary kacapi (zither) master Uking Sukri, provides the perfect accompaniment to Komariah’s highly ornamental and technically virtuosic vocal style.
Joining the performance is Andrew Timar, a pioneer of Canadian new music gamelan, and soloist with the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan in Toronto, who brings a masterful musicality to the Sundanese suling (bamboo ring flute).
