The Alphabet

The following text is taken from Front Magazine, vol. VII, no. 3, p. 14, January/February 1996:

Clarinetist François Houle and Poet Catriona Strang have been collaborating in a variety of ways for several years. In this performance they will present several letters from their ongoing project The Alphabet, a work which inhabits and interrogates systems on notation, and is often based primarily on musical parameters.

François Houle is a noted Habs fan on the crest of new directions in the improvisational world; he has collaborated on numerous projects with some of the finest improvisors, including Dylan van der Schyff, Tony Wilson, Marilyn Crispell, Joëlle Léandre, Georg Graewe, Dave Douglas, Evan Parker, Myra Melford, Phil Haynes, Mark Dresser, Lisle Ellis, Paul Plimley and Vinny Golia.

Catriona Strang is the author of Low Fancy, TEM, and the co-author of the collaborative chapbooks The Barscheit Horse and The Institute Songbook. She is a member of The Institute, and a fan of the Habs.
