The following text is taken from Front Magazine, vol. V, no. 3, p. 9, January/February 1994:

– Garbo’s Hat featuring Kate Hammet-Vaughan (01/27/94)

Vocalist Kate Hammet-Vaughan’s interpretations of jazz standards and her exploration of free vocalizing and contemporary art songs have placed her at the forefront of her art in this country. In the cooperative jazz trio, Garbo’s Hat, Hammet-Vaughan and her musical mates, saxophonist Graham Ord and bassist Paul Blaney, explore the edge of the jazz mainstream and beyond in standards and original compositions. Performing, recording and touring since 1988, Garbo’s Hat has captured the ears and imaginations of audiences across Canada.

Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet (01/28/94)

Amy Denio, Marjorie de Muynck, Jessica Lurie, Barbara Marino and drummer Pam Barger make up this unique quartet from the Pacific North West. The group is named in memory of Billy Tipton (born Dorothy Lucille Tipton) who performed as a man to pass in the jazz world for over fifty years. Says Amy Denio, “If there’s a statement, text to encourage people to follow their true path, whatever that means, not to bow to society’s expectations, just to strike out on their own. If you get support for that, all the better. It was so incredible that Billy Tipton lived his life the way you wanted to, and we really respect that.” The quartet plays a blend of rock, kelzmer and jazz, and has even been heard playing a Carpenters and Led Zeppelin medley.
